Heroica Mulege, the oasis on the coast of the California Gulf where it is possible to visit one of the best preserved missions in Baja California Sur.
Mulege is a small community located 135 kms north of Loreto on the coast of the California Gulf. Mulege offers unique attractions like the possibility of visiting one of the most beautiful and well-preserved missions in the peninsula, tasting delicious regional dishes, and enjoying breathtaking landscapes. Mulege, like several other communities in the region, is located in an oasis in the middle of the desert.
In 1705 the Jesuit monks founded the Santa Rosalia de Mulege mission, which today, is one of the best-preserved missions in the region and one of the main tourist attractions. Inside the temple visitors can find the original statue of Saint Rosalia, which like the altar, dates back to the XVIII century. From this point it is possible to do a short hike to the lookout to enjoy the view of the oasis covered with palm trees that go all the way to the seashore.
In 1847, during the United States Intervention War, the Mexican army fought and won the battle of Mulege against the United States army, and since then this village is formally known as Heroic Mulege for having hosted this important victory.

Some kilometers south of Heroica Mulege there are the beautiful beaches of Concepcion Bay, perfect for camping, spend the day or settle in for a few nights in case of traveling on a RV.
Mulege is a recommended stop on Ruta 1 for resting, and stocking up before resuming the trip along this route.
