SAN FRANCISCO SIERRA

The San Francisco Sierra holds the oldest cave paintings in the American continent and invites visitors to explore its canyons and learn more about the local cowboys.

The San Francisco Sierra is inside the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve and located 140 kms southeast from Guerrero Negro, along Ruta 1.   Once inside the Sierra and along winding narrow trails on the edge a canyon, travelers can find the la Cueva del Ratón (Mouse Cave.)

To access the cave and see the paintings, it is necessary first to visit the San Francisco de la Sierra ranch, where the rancheros (ranchers) who are the custodians of this place will assign each visitor or group of visitors a local guide who takes care of opening the gates to the ancient treasure that lies within.

It is worth mentioning that there are many cave paintings scattered around the San Francisco Sierra, however there are in places of difficult access or special permits are required.

The San Francisco Sierra offers visitors the opportunity to have unique experiences like visit some ranches and from there do horseback riding, hikes up and down the canyons or learn how to make goat cheese.
